November, 2019 - March, 2020 - Don Bergland is currently living in Guanajuato City, Mexico, working through a focused studio residency. He occupies a studio casa in the Barrio De La Presa of the city, where he lives and works in a large historical residence studio.
He has conducted residencies in this city before, in 2017/18 and 2016/17. During these residencies, he has completed large bodies of work, most of which has moved on to the international exhibiting circuit with many of the works winning exhibition awards.
During his current residency, he hopes to complete a new series of work dealing with the themes of Eternity, Mortality, and exhibit these internationally during 2020.
One of the elements of this wonderfully historical city is that it energizes his love for the Baroque era. The city itself is a massive collection of historical Spanish architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. This offers much inpiration both in his pursuit of image content as well as for his interest in historical framing methods.
At this point, he has researched early Spanish artists and their philosophies of frame-building, but has not ventured into the area of creating his own aesthetic design.
